Biography

Dr Christine Frison has been a research professor at the Faculty of Law, Political Science and Criminology at the University of Liège since January 2024, and a visiting professor at the Catholic University of Louvain - Saint Louis Brussels. She is also a research associate at the Government & Law research group (University of Antwerp, Belgium) and at the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL, MacGill University, Canada).

Prior to this, Christine Frison was a Research Fellow at the Belgian Scientific Research Fund (F.R.S.-FNRS) at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research in Legal Sciences (UCLouvain) from 2020 to 2023, and a Research Fellow at the Belgian Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Fund (FWO) at the Law Faculty of the University of Antwerp from 2017 to 2020.

Her expertise is international environmental law with a focus on the law and governance of biodiversity and agricultural biodiversity. Ms Frison has received four awards for her research. She has published numerous articles and five books; the latest (co-edited with Fabien Girard and Ingrid Hall) was published by Routledge in June 2022 and is entitled `Biocultural Rights, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. Protecting Culture and the Environment. Her PhD thesis on the legal analysis of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture was published in 2018 by Routledge `Redesigning the Global Seed Commons: Law and Policy for Agrobiodiversity and Food Security.

Christine Frison created and directs the new `EcoLAWgy¿ research centre at the Univeristé de Liège, whose general research focus is the questioning of international environmental law from an ecocentric, decolonial, feminist and ecological angle. She has obtained funding or co-funding for various research projects to carry out the work of the EcoLAWgy centre, including an ERC Starting Grant for her DecoLawBiodiv project (2024-2028).

She teaches (or has taught) international environmental law, climate law, sustainable development and legal research methodology for bachelor's and master's level courses at the Université catholique de Louvain-Saint Louis Bruxelles, the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the University of Antwerp. She supervises numerous Master's theses and several doctoral dissertations.

She occasionally works as a consultant for international organisations (European Commission, United Nations Environment Programme, Food and Agriculture Organisation, etc.) or national bodies (Federal Public Service - Environment in Belgium, Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, etc.).
